Managers Buy Plastic Molding Firm
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Brothers Armen and Haig Kassouni are the new owners of N-K Manufacturing
Technologies LLC, after managing the company for a dozen years.
N-K Manufacturing was
formerly part of the Nicholas Plastics Inc., and the plastic injection
molding businesses still have close ties.
"Our family and the Nicholas
family have been in the plastics business off and on since the 1960s,"
said Armen Kassouni, 46.
He is vice president of N-K
Manufacturing. His brother, Haig, 48, is president.
The business at 1134 Freeman
Ave. SW employs 125 and includes 34 molding presses for the automotive
and office furniture industries.
"We're trying to diversify
across several different boundaries," Kassouni said.
"We are also working very
hard to make the transition from custom molder to a supplier of unique
technologies. We're not just trying to compete with everybody."
The Nicholas and Kassouni
families launched N-K Manufacturing in 1995.
The firm is a custom molder
of plastics, specializing in multi-shot, insert and over-molding
technologies. Headquarters are in Grand Rapids, with other sites in
Troy, Monterrey, Mexico and Southeast Asia.
"With all the negative
publicity the auto industry has right now, both my brother and I were
very confident of not only our existence, but our growth, or we wouldn't
have decided to invest in West Michigan and stay here," Kassouni said.
"It may be an extremely
tough industry, but we feel we will not only survive but thrive."
